Dräger: A 3D illustration of the planned logistics centre at Dräger’s site in Lübeck, Germany

04. 八月 2015 A new logistics centre for medical and safety equipment expert Dräger Dräger, a manufacturer of medical products and safety equipment, has tasked intralogistics specialist SSI Schäfer with constructing a logistics centre in Lübeck, Germany. The new facility will house Dräger’s manufacturing and logistics operations.

Dräger operates a number of manufacturing plants around the globe, including two in Lübeck. The company has recently decided to consolidate production and logistics at its Revalstrasse site. The new facility is designed to accelerate production processes, cut costs by eliminating the need to transfer materials between the two Lübeck plants, and reduce inventory size.

As Holger Völkel, who heads Dräger’s manufacturing logistics team in Lübeck, explains, “As part of our ongoing ‘factory of the future’ project, we aim to ensure that our manufacturing and logistics processes are truly interconnected. In concrete terms, our goal is to supply our production staff with the materials they need within two hours of them submitting their requirements.” Dräger has commissioned SSI Schaefer to turn this vision into reality. As Völkel adds, “We were very impressed by SSI Schaefer’s end-to-end service offering. Visiting one of the company’s reference projects in southern Germany ultimately sealed the deal.”

The intralogistics specialist will now team up with Dräger to establish a logistics centre that will combine the supply of parts with a Kanban system. The scope of services includes an automated small parts warehouse with 120,000 storage positions, while seven Schaefer Miniload Crane (SMC) storage and retrieval systems will fully automate the container picking and putaway process – for maximum speed and efficiency. SSI Schaefer will also equip the new centre with an automated high-bay warehouse with 6,500 euro pallet positions. This warehouse will be served by four energy-efficient Exyz storage and retrieval systems. Moreover, the facility will feature user-friendly workstations, designed in line with the ergonomics@work® concept. In total, there will be seven workstations for putaway in the receiving department, and eight in the picking area. All workstations will follow the goods-to-picker principle, and will be connected to the small parts warehouse (via a container conveyor) or the high-bay warehouse (via a pallet conveyor). SSI Schaefer logistics software WAMAS® will streamline all warehouse and material flow process management tasks.

SSI Schaefer will construct the new facility during ongoing operations – with no disruption to manufacturing processes. Following completion and commissioning in spring 2016, Dräger will enjoy the benefits of an intralogistics solution designed to meet future challenges.
